Cars Suck

That's the title of a diary on Daily Kos this evening. I agree with every word. Read it, and apply its lessons to your life now.

I agree wholeheartedly with much in that post as well, with the exception of one nuanced little point. As someone who has gone car-less for close to fifteen years, there have been several benefits. One of which is my wife and I buy less food since we can only buy as much as we can carry home. So the need for delivery services, to me, is only a necessity for those with mobility obstacles, be those physical through disability and old age, or those who live nowhere near a food market, or those who have larger families. So we definitely need the delivery services for those who need it, but able-bodied single folk and couples (like myself) who have accessible (on foot, bike, or public transit) food markets around them need to begin rethinking the quantities of stuff they buy along with rethinking how 'necessary' cars are.

I also do most of my grocery shopping by bicycle or foot, living 10 minutes' walk from our supermarket. However, there are some things that don't lend themselves to hand-carried delivery. Furniture and large consumer electronics, for example. Fortunately, most providers of such things already offer delivery service for them.

I'll also cop to using grocery delivery services in my area. It's a great way to "stock up" on dry staples without multiple trips by bike or walking. I do wonder, however, why we need a new, government-run service to deliver stuff... we have private companies that already offer delivery. I'm all for government, normally, but if the market is already offering a quality service, why try and force a politically unpopular government restructuring through as well?
